Sopron is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities of the country invites her guests to a visit. The ancient setlement lies in the gentle valley between the Sopron Mountains and the Hills near Balf. Sopron offers perfect harmony between architecture and landscape, adventurous excursions, new impression, attractive cultural programs and nice curteous hospitality. The inner town is surrounded by a triple medieval wallring built on ancient Roman basements, its regular oval form, the clear structure of its groundplan has no match in Europe. The visitor enters conventionally in the North, through the so-called fore-gate since two thousand years. The Fire-Watch Tower above it became the symbol of the city. The gothic Goatchurch gave place to coronations and diets in the 17th century. The multilingual noise of cheerful visitors fills the main square.

Due to the splendid old buildings and museums Sopron got the name City of Museums. From the fortified inner town one comes through one of the old gates to the street Várkerület (castle circle), which is nowadays the most important shopping street of the city. The Upper and Lower (Lővérs) were always preferred parts of the city, now it is the district of recreation and of illustrious villas. The nature in the environment the genign, curing alpine air, the vistas, the springs as well as the comfortable hotels and the sanatorium makes Sopron to a very beautiful and nice spa of Hungary. |
Romantic lanes, forests with cyclamens and sweet chesnut trees invite to longer walks. The wonderful landscape and flora, the subalpine climate yield ideal possibility for holidays, for carefree recreation and for recovery from diseases. The city gave a lot of important literaries, musicians, artists and architects to Europe in course of the centuries. It is well known that Ferenc Liszt as a child of 9 gave his first concert here in 1820. The Petőfi Theater in Sopron waits the visitors quality performances year after year.
Wine-growing-culture goes back till the third century before Christ. The Celts already became aware of the advantageous conditions of the area for grape-culture. The viticulturists (poncichters) in Sopron kept their wines in the cellars of their houses and got the right from the city to sell their wines on the spot. Sopron is proud of the honour to be called as The Capitalcity of Bluefrankish. Traditional dishes of Sopron are offered the local wines in the friendly inns of the city. The specialities of the local kitchen are made from mushrooms of the fields, from fishes and wild birds of the Lake Fertő, from sweet chestnut as well as from bean raised between the rows of wine-grapes.

There are many options of excursion in Sopron region. In the pictoresque valley of the Rákos creek, at the shore of the Lake Fertő lies Fertőrákos. The country-town was defended on both sides by a wall. The Romans already liked the Leitha limestone cut in the vicinity of Fertőrákos from which sculptures can be easily carred. A special way of cutting was used in the quarry, due to it gigantic underground spaces came into being between high stone pillars. The excellent acoustics of the cave and the wonderful natural surrounding iniciated to arrange here musical and opera performances which yield a unique experience. |
There is a small park for the memory of the demolition of the iron curtain on the place of the Pan- European Picnic arranged on 19th August 1989. The Lake Fertő is a real paradise of the lovers of water and wind: it offers the possibility to bath, to surf, to sail. There are visitors who want to take part in a small shipping excursion, others want to enjoy the rich flora and the exotic fauna of the area.

Fertőd -25 km far from Sopron - was established by the unification of Eszterháza and Süttör in 1950. On the place of the Esterházy-castle, there was the hunting house of the family in 1720. On its place the rich duke Miklós Esterházy „ the Brilliant” let build an immense palace-ensamble of horseshoe form. The wings enclose a splendid Baroque court. On the square before the castle are buildings of the former guards, westwards is a riding school, an inn and the so-called „Music House”, in which Joseph Haydn the form-creating genius of the 18th century lived and worked between 1766 and 1790. An exhibition is spent to his memory.The National Park Fertő-Hanság is by 2 km farther in Sarród. with its reed roofed central-building fitting perfectly into the landscape. Scientific research of flora and fauna of the region is made here. |
